ADHD Q & A

What is ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a childhood neurodevelopmental disorder. Although it's most common in children, it can persist into adulthood. The main symptoms of ADHD relate to behavior and concentration.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

Although ADHD symptoms can be different from one child to another, most kids who suffer from this condition have some of the following symptoms.

  • Frequent daydreaming
  • Forgetfulness
  • Constant fidgeting
  • Constant talking, or not allowing others to speak
  • Mistakes due to rushing or carelessness
  • Impatience
  • Social difficulties

There are three kinds of ADHD, including:

  • Predominantly inattentive: concentration issues, but few behavior problems
  • Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive: behavior issues including hyperactivity and impulsivity but few attention issues
  • Combined: both attention and behavior problems

Your child's type of ADHD may change with time, and treatment approach may need to change as well.

How does the doctor diagnose ADHD?

Diagnosing ADHD can be complex because there's not an individual test to do so. Other conditions, including some learning disabilities and anxiety, may mimic ADHD so Dr. Buono or Dr. Cotler will first eliminate other diagnoses.

ADHD diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive checklist of symptoms.  Dr. Buono and Dr. Cotler use both direct observation and your own observations to decide which symptoms apply.

The diagnosis is made only after a period of careful observation and consideration. Dr. Buono and Dr. Cotler are experienced pediatricians who understand the intricacies of diagnosing ADHD, and they'll approach diagnosis with understanding and compassion.

What is the treatment for ADHD?

ADHD treatment is unique to the individual child. Often, the best approach is a multipronged one that incorporates both behavioral interventions and therapies, perhaps in addition to prescription medication. Behavioral therapy requires parental support and guidance, so Dr. Buono and Dr. Cotler will help you learn the best ways to support your child in this.

If your child is school age, it's important to inform their teacher of the treatment plan and keep them updated on any future changes. With your family's commitment and the help of your Buono Pediatrics & Wellness care providers, you can manage your child's ADHD symptoms in the best way possible.
