Cold/Flu Q & A

What is a cold?

A cold is a virus that causes upper respiratory tract symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose, and sore throat. Sometimes, colds can cause a low-grade fever as well. Generally, colds last for anywhere from several days up to 10 days.

What is the flu?

The flu is caused by specific influenza viruses. As with a cold, the flu affects your child's upper respiratory tract and causes symptoms like sore throat, runny nose, or stuffy nose. But, with the flu, your child may also have bodywide symptoms like chills, body aches, and exhaustion.

Your child may also lose their appetite. Flu often causes a fever, and it's usually higher than a cold-induced fever at over 102┬░F. Usually, the flu lasts for anywhere from a week up to a maximum of around three weeks.

How does the doctor diagnose cold or flu?

Dr. Buono and Dr. Cotler diagnose colds based on your child's symptoms. If it's potentially a flu case, Dr. Buono or Dr. Cotler may do a quick flu test in which they swab your child's nose or throat. The test takes just a few minutes so you'll get results in that same appointment.

What is the treatment for cold and flu?

Although there's no cure for either, some specific home care can really help your child feel comfortable. Dr. Buono or Dr. Cotler may recommend over-the-counter products like Children's Tylenol® to reduce fever and alleviate aches and pains.

Give your child plenty of fluids, as recommended by Dr. Buono or Dr. Cotler, and allow them to rest as much as possible. A bedroom humidifier may help alleviate nasal congestion. If your child has the flu, Dr. Buono or Dr. Cotler may prescribe an antiviral to help them recover faster.

If your child gets an antiviral medication, Dr. Buono or Dr. Cotler will discuss potential side effects with you before starting the drug. The best way to prevent flu in the future is to schedule yearly flu shots for your child. The shot only take a few minutes and the protection lasts all year.
