Urgent Care Q & A

What urgent care services are available?

Urgent care visits are available to diagnose symptoms when your child is not feeling well. Dr. Buono and Dr. Cotler can accurately diagnose and treat conditions such as:

  • Fever
  • Skin rashes
  • Sore throats
  • Ear infections
  • Asthma exacerbations

In-office evaluations ensure you get a fast diagnosis so treatment can begin appropriate treatments as soon as possible.

When should I bring my child in for an evaluation?

While you can treat many illnesses effectively at home with over-the-counter medications and rest, some reasons you should seek a medical evaluation at Buono Pediatrics & Wellness may include if your child experiences:

  • Persistent diarrhea
  • Unexplained pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Frequent, recurrent vomiting
  • Visible skin rashes

A fever of 104 degrees or more, or one that lasts longer than 5 days, also needs evaluation by the pediatrician.

These symptoms can indicate a more serious medical condition that needs treatment by a physician. It’s important to note that young children and those with pre-existing health conditions may be at higher risk when struggling with certain symptoms. If you are concerned about your child’s health, do not hesitate to reach out to the office staff for help with determining whether your child needs an in-office evaluation.

Some symptoms, like frequent vomiting or diarrhea, can dehydrate your child and become a life-threatening situation. Children with these symptoms can many times be treated at home without an in-office evaluation, however, if you have concerns about your child’s hydration a quick call to the office for advice on at home management and can help you determine if further intervention is needed.

If your child loses consciousness or suffers a head injury or other serious injury, contact emergency services or 911 right away.

What treatment options are available for urgent care?

After a review of your child’s medical history and their symptoms, Dr. Buono and Dr. Cotler create a treatment plan with the goal of alleviating symptoms and helping your child feel comfortable.

For bacterial infections, the physicians may recommend a course of antibiotics and over-the-counter pain relievers. Your child should also get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids to prevent dehydration.

If your child has a viral infection, like the flu, antibiotics won’t help. However, Dr. Buono and Dr. Cotler can develop a treatment plan for home care, which includes rest, over-the-counter medications, and other therapies to alleviate symptoms until the virus runs its course.

Other treatment options are available to treat your child’s symptoms and encourage a faster recovery. Dr. Buono and Dr. Cotler may also schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your child’s recovery and ensure treatment is working properly.
